A driver fleeing Wyandotte police at speeds of more than 100 mph crashed into two electric poles, causing a transformer to explode and showering sparks onto the roadway.
The incident began at 9:15 p.m. Sept. 19 when police were sent to a house in the 4200 block of 19th Street in response to a domestic violence situation.
Police said that the offender, a 53-year-old Detroit man, destroyed property throughout the house before intentionally ramming his vehicle into a parked car.
As the man fled the scene, an officer spotted his vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. He then fled at a high rate of speed on northbound Fort Street. Police said his vehicle increased speeds to more that 100 mph.
The driver lost control on Fort Street, near Mill Street, in Lincoln Park, where he crashed into two electric poles.
The impact caused live power lines to be severed and land on the ground. As the pursuing officer exited his vehicle, an electrical transformer on the west side of Fort Street exploded, showering sparks throughout the street.
Wyandotte police said that despite the chaos and dangers that the situation presented, the suspect fled the crash scene on foot.
Officers pursued the man through the neighborhoods and conducted a yard-to-yard search.
Several hours later an officer found the man and arrested him. Criminal charges are pending.
