Grassfire sparked after rifle rounds damage fire department vehicle, transformer | County 17

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Large-caliber rifle rounds were reportedly fired at a vehicle storage shed and a power transformer yesterday afternoon, sparking a grassfire north of Recluse, Campbell County Sheriff Scott Matheney said Friday.

At least one round was fired at a Campbell County Fire Department vehicle storage shed on Bitter Creek Road, causing over $1,000 in damage to the vehicle inside, while another struck the transformer outside the building, Matheny said.

The transformer began leaking oil after being struck, which ignited after the transformer started arcing, according to Matheny.  began to arc, according to Matheny.

A CCFD incident report says the fire was contained at 6.19 acres at 3:09 p.m.

No suspects have been identified, and the investigation is ongoing, per Matheny.
