Norwell fire responded to call of a battery fire at the Norwell Tesla dealership at approximately 10:30 AM in the morning. En route, they were notified that it was a fire to a car inside the service garage at the dealership.

Upon arrival, the scene was described as a vehicle fire that sounded like a large transformer on telephone poles during a storm. It was arcing causing the initial battery fire. A large amount of water was used to extinguish the fire.

Damage was limited to the initial car that was being serviced. There may be some heat damage to the car next to it.

No injuries were reported from the fire.

Norwell fire consulted with Tesla engineers in Pennsylvania to learn how to safely move the vehicle. Firefighters and Tesla workers combined to push the vehicle outside the service garage and into the parking lot where the battery was being monitored for temperature fluctuations. Tesla engineers are en route from Philadelphia to safely dismantle the battery system.

A state hazmat team have determined from their testing that there's no hazard to the public health currently. DEP and other environmental agencies is on the scene. They will require Tesla to have a licensed site professional like Safe Harbor to do more invasive testing to ensure that there were not more runoff concerns. Most of the runoff was contained in a very large tank on site.

There was some concern about what happens when you mix water with a Lithium ion battery that has been compromised. They want to ensure that there isn't any hazardous material being released with the water mixture.
