P/Harcourt –  Twenty indigenes drawn from Ogu and Onne Communities are to benefit from empowerment programme of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) as contained in a press release last week.

The empowerment and training programme by NPA and Onne Port Complex host communities is packaged by the Joint Free Zone Community Relations Initiative (JFZCRI).

Meanwhile, JFZCRI, DAILY  INDEPENDENT gathered  was a Non-Governmental body formed in 2004 by NPA along with Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority as members with the view to dealing with the demands of the host communities and its environs.

The idea was to promote peaceful co-existence and for smooth operations in the Port.

Companies belonging to Joint Free Zone Community Relations Initiative that contribute funds to the activities include NPA Onne Port, Total E&P Nigeria Ltd, West Atlantic Shipyard and Brawal Oil Services Ltd. Others include Alcon Nigerian LTD and West African Ventures (WAV).

Alhassan Ismaila Abubakar, the chairman of the Initiative is Onne Port Manager, while the Vice Chairman is the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority. The beneficiaries comprised 10 youths each from Onne and Ogu making 20 participants.

Out of the numbers, two males from Onne were to be trained in Catering and Decoration unit of the programme.

Receiving the trainees at the Onne Port Conference Room, Barbara Ejemeh Nchey-Achukwu (Mrs.),the Acting Port Manager, who represented the Onne Port Manager, Alhassan Ismaila Abubakar, commended them for their show of interest to acquire skill, describing the training they  were  about to enter as a sacrifice that was  worthy of note.

“Empowerment is about life surviving skills, to earn a living. You are going to be empowered by learning a skill”, the Ag Port Manager stated.

Continuing, she said there could be challenges in the course of their training, but encouraged them to be committed, focused and resilient till the end of their training maintaining that they should not go back or succumb to challenges and constraints that may arise, but to be dogged and determined to move on in order to succeed.

“Please ensure that this skill you are going to acquire is utilised fully, because it will help you take care of yourself. Don’t horde the information. At the end of your training ensure you teach others”, Mrs. Achukwu admonished.

She noted that NPA Management at the Headquarters and those at Onne Port Joint Free Zone Community Relations Initiative (JFZCRI) are committed to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the Port host communities, stressing that this informed the Initiative to train Youths and Women in the communities.

She observed that peace within the Port environment was important to the body if members would continue to be in business, and support such programmes for the host communities.

She charged them to go home and tell their brothers, uncles and husbands to always maintain peace at all times.

While commending the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman for her continuous support through Food Support Initiatives; and other projects to host communities, she also expressed her appreciation to Onne Port Manager, Alhassan Ismaila Abubakar for running an open-door policy which according to her has assisted him to understand the challenges of the host communities, while taking action to solve them.

She went further to acknowledge the other Ports Operators for embarking on their respective Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) executed in different communities.

Earlier in a speech, Mr. Gaius .N. Oguegbunum, the Secretary of the Joint Free Zone Community Relations Initiative (JFZCRI) said that the  training of the indigenes of the communities was another strategy of the body to create wealth and empower members  of the host communities to participate in creating wealth for the nation.

He said that the training which would be executed by a catering and fashion designing outfit in Port Harcourt would last between three to six  months while  urging them to take the training seriously and improve on their economic wellbeing.

A participant at the training, Okajor Nkemjika Nnenaya from Ogu Community thanked the NPA for the opportunity given them.

She assured that they would do their best, not to disappoint the body.

One of the male beneficiaries, Mr. Gift Atamaru, from Onne Community also thanked NPA and JFZCRI for the opportunity, and said he would do all to learn so as to earn a living from the training.

“I feel so excited that I am involved. I look forward to coming out with flying colours. There will be no distractions”, Gift Johnbull from Ogu stated.

Among such projects executed as CSR for the respective host communities include the commissioning of six classroom blocks and toilets at Ogu Community Secondary School; commissioning of 500KVA/33/0.415KV Transformer in Onne community.

The body also facilitated a one day sensitization seminar for Community Liaison Officers and building of Civic Center at Onne among others.
