RARITAN, NJ — A transformer fire and a downed utility pole have caused Route 28 to close in both directions in Raritan.

Raritan Borough Fire Department was called out to the Burger King parking lot, 501 Route 28, where a pole and transformer was taken down, said Fire Chief Brian Kredatus.

The pole had fallen across the highway causing it to close in both directions just West of County Route 567/Country Club Road in Raritan Borough, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation's 511NJ website.

Emergency responders were able to cut the pole and reopen the highway.

Burger King remains without power as of 12:15 p.m., said Kredatus.

It is unclear what cause the pole to topple, but Kredatus speculated that it was related to the passing storm.

The Raritan Borough Fire Department is entirely volunteer-run. If interested in joining the department visit raritanfire.com or call 908-707-8540.
