The Keokuk Fire Department received a call about a structure fire about 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday at Allied Blending on Royal Road. However, a second call came in immediately after saying it was a transformer fire closer to Griffin Wheel.

The fire department checked the Royal Road location and then turned around and headed to Carbide Lane, turning into the entrance to Griffin Wheel, arriving there at about 10:39 p.m.

A dramatic video posted by Scott Davis on Facebook showed the sky lit up from what was apparently electrical equipment that was malfunctioning, sparking, burning and putting smoke into the air.

Alliant Energy spokesperson Melissa McCarville said while Alliant will be assisting Griffin Wheel with some hook ups when repairs are made, that company will be handling investigation and repair.

Attempts to reach Griffin Wheel or its parent company, Amsted Rail, about the incident were unsuccessful.

According to a report from the Keokuk Fire Department, a transformer had apparently been struck by lightning. Fire personnel did find a small amount of material still burning on the scene when they arrived and used an extinguisher to put it out.

The department returned to the station at 11:24 p.m. after Alliant Energy arrived on scene.
