CT's equivalence principle is shown as figure1. As we can know from the figure, the main reason of causing ratio error and phase angle error is the error of excitation loss's current Iex and turns ratio Np/Ns. So for 5%, 20%,100%,120% rated current output, if Iex amplitude and phase position and true turns ratio Np/Ns are known, then the ratio error and angle error of CT at this time can be calculated. The tester calculates the ratio error and phase angle error of CT by the measured turns ratio Np/Ns and excitation loss Iex.
Turns Ratio Np/Ns can be got by inputting voltage on the secondary side under no-load condition and test the primary induced voltage. Iex can be got by test the secondary side's excitation characteristics. Because Iex is determined by the induced electromotive force of secondary circuit, Iex amplitude and phase angle can be got from excitation characteristics. When the secondary current and the secondary load are known, Vex value is also can be got by calculation and get Iex value by checking out the excitation characteristics data table.
